Argumentative Outline

ROLE: Lasallian Student
AUDIENCE: Students.
PURPOSE: to persuade them that homeschooling would less pressure the student and increase the student learning capacity.

I.                   INTRODUCTION

A.     Hook:

It’s been an issue for the students, if how are they going to spend their schooling habit; should they consider the traditional one where in they have to attend their class in the classroom, or the trending one, having home schooling where in having class on their own house? Let the students, asses first the pros and cons of having home schooling, let them make some comparison between traditional schooling and home schooling. Education is an important tool in building our future. Education approaches is still evolving, innovative, we can adopt any of those ideas, but still, all these approaches have the same intent. Traditional schooling refers to a school set-up where a teacher-student-classmate set-up is found. While as for homeschooling, the student stays at his house and his parent or tutor is the teacher.

B.     Background of the Issue:

1.      Supporting Detail

Many children spend about seven to eight hours per day at a traditional school, during which time the parent is free to work or participate in other activities. Home schooling will typically involve less classroom time each day but the parent is teaching or supervising during this time. (May,nd)

2.      Supporting Detail

Kids who are homeschooled may benefit from the one-on-one attention. For instance, if you don't understand something in math, the whole class won't be moving on without you. You might be the whole class! It's also possible that you might learn more than you would in a regular classroom, because if you really excel at something, you can keep learning more at your own pace. (Dowshen, January 2012).

Selecting home school for your child is a big decision that will impact many aspects of your family life. As an alternative to traditional schooling, home schooling means that students are taught at home. Parents provide structure for their children's education, and they have access to many resources to help them guide the learning process. (Michaelson, August 2011)

THESIS STATEMENT:

Nowadays, formal education take place, homeschooling should be the choice of parents for many flaws exhibited by regular institutionalized schooling.

II.                BODY:

A.     COUNTER-ARGUMENT + REFUTATION

Education is an important tool in building the future of your children. There are different education approaches that may be adopted by the child, but nevertheless, all these approaches have the same goal. Traditional schooling refers to a school set-up where a teacher-student-classmate set-up is found. While as for homeschooling, the student stays at his house and his parent or tutor is the teacher.

1.      Supporting Detail #1 for CA:

Homeschooling has a more flexible schedule. Usually, the schedule is decided on by the parents. The teaching parent is also the one monitoring the activities of his child.

2.      Supporting Detail #2 for CA:

In homeschooling, the teacher may not be a licensed professional. It can be the parent or a hired tutor. Moreover, the student-teacher ratio in homeschooling is 1:1. This allows a more concentrated learning process.

3.      Supporting Detail #1 for R:

In traditional schooling, the schedule is fixed. The child goes to school at a specific time, studies lessons at a given time and goes home afterwards. A child spends 8 hours of his day at the school.

4.      Supporting Detail #2 for R:

In a traditional school, the ratio of teacher to students is 1:30, 40 or 50. This prevents the teacher to address the difficulty of each child within the thirty or forty minute time slot allotted to each subject. In the case of home schooling, if you are teaching the child a particular topic, like quadratic equations in math, and the child cannot grasp the examples and application very easily, you could restructure the time slot from half an hour of learning to one hour. ( Koonar, July 2008) This can greatly restrict the amount of time a teacher has to spend with an individual who may be having problems.  In a cramped classroom packed with thirty (or more) students, even the most skilled of all public school teachers are incapable of giving each child the time and attention they need for successful learning and achievement. Individual learning styles, personalities, schedules, and skills are irrelevant in a large classroom setting. On the other hand, children are taught to work together and problem-solve in groups with other children, gaining knowledge and experience from these interactions.

B.     ARGUMENT #1:

Related with the schedules, which is best? Home schooling or traditional schooling?

1.      Supporting Detail #1:

Traditional schools have a predetermined schedule that they follow. The home school schedule is flexible and determined by the educator. (Akery,nd)

2.      Supporting Detail #2:

Traditional schools work within a fixed time slot, which robs both parent and child with very little time to devote to them every day. In addition to the timings of the traditional school, their setup of each subject to learn is addressed and limited to a certain time frame, which may or may not be enough for every child to grasp the taught subject. (Koonar, July 2008)

3.      Supporting Detail #3:

A home schooling family may spend days visiting the zoo, touring museums or traveling to other educational sites in an effort to expose children to as much information as possible. This added time together will strengthen family bonds -- both between parents and children and among siblings. Parents who home school will not have to struggle to get information about their children's days. In home school settings, conversations about topics covered during lessons can extend to the dinner table and lead to interesting insights into the children's thoughts. (Michaelson, August 2011) One of the best things about home school was that the parent worked closely with their children and could observe on a daily basis where they needed more work and where they did not.

C.     ARGUMENT #2:

Between home schooling and traditional schooling, which is more effective in terms of academic achievement of a student?

1.      Supporting Detail #1:

One-on-one tutoring helps students effectively learn, and a parent can ensure that the child has mastered a topic or skill before progressing to a new topic, which is not often possible in a traditional classroom. This benefit is especially important for a child with special needs or behavior problems. (Michaelson, August 2011)

2.      Supporting Detail #2:

Homeschooling allows the child to learn at his own pace while traditional schooling approach allows the child to learn with his same age-group.

3.      Supporting Detail #3:

Home schooling environment makes the child confident to learn easily, besides possessing talent and knowledge. There is no competition and hence no fear, as may be the case with many children, who drop out of traditional schools. ( Koonar, July 2008) The absence of peer pressure and negative influences is also an advantage of home schooling. Home schooling provides a safe and confident feeling for a child. Learning can be easier on a child without the distractions of peer influences. Peer pressure is less likely in a home schooled environment, where most children are encouraged to explore their own interests and develop their individual styles.

III.             CONCLUSION:

A.     Summary/Restatement:

It is difficult to know if you are doing the right thing concerning your child's education. The truth is, there is no right or wrong decision here. You can choose either method and as long as it is done appropriately, your child will receive the greatest possible benefits. (The Oley School, July 2008)

B.     Closing Statement:

In decision making in choosing between the traditional school and to home schooling can be difficult for parents. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages to consider. The choice depends on which type of schooling best fulfills the needs of both the parent and child. While the decision to home school a child or send him or her to a traditional school can be a difficult one, a parent must remember the ultimate goal the child is to achieve. That goal is to receive an education to improve their future. A parent must consider all the advantages as well as disadvantages for both forms of schooling. Although home schooling may be a convenience for some, a decision must be made based upon the advantages and disadvantages of both ways of schooling.
